In the spring of 2019, I had the grace of living in the holy place of the multiplication of loaves and fishes in Tabgha, on the north shore of the Sea of Galilee.

The place belongs to the “German Association of the Holy Land” (https://www.dvhl.de/) and you can admire the ancient Byzantine church with the rock where, according to tradition, Jesus sat to multiply the loaves and fish.

The place is guarded by a varied community of lay and religious people led by the Benedictine monks of the Dormition Abbey of Jerusalem, who have a priory in Tabgha (http://www.dormitio.net/english/en.tabgha/index.html).

Young volunteers come to this place every year to experience the Holy Land and to bring their contribution. From my friendship with a group of them was born the song “Multiply Our Love”, which I wrote thinking about this place and which my volunteer friends offered to sing with me. Although almost all of us are improvised singers, we did our best and my friends did really well.

Together with my friends. From left to right: Marlene, Sophia R., Mick, Sophia P., Manuel, me, Hudson

The friendship with these volunteers was one of the most beautiful gifts I received in Tabgha and between us there was really that unexpected joy of when understanding and friendship – rarely happens in life, but it happens – are perfect and go beyond expectations. I will cherish the memory of these guys and our wonderful friendship as a perennial balm that encourages me in my daily difficulties.

From left to right, Fr. Basilius, former Prior of Tabgha, Fr. Bernard, Abbot of the Dormition, Fr. Jonas, Prior of Tabgha

The song was also inspired by the free hospitality and friendship of the Benedictine Monks, who welcomed me as one of them for 3 months without asking anything in return, treating me with great charity and offering me their testimony of generous dedication to the Lord, as well as by the sisters and all the people who live and work and visit Tabgha.

The song (Multiply Our Love = Multiply Our Love) is not exactly the Gregorian chant you would expect from a hermit … but it rocks !!! It speaks of the miracle of the multiplication of loaves and fishes and it is a prayer to the Lord to multiply our love. It also speaks about the welcoming reality of Tabgha, where disabled people and groups of young people assisted by volunteers and monks are hosted in a house called Beit Noah, and pilgrims and tourists passing through at the Pilgerhaus.

“Multiply our love, is a river that will never cease to flow”

In life we have to say goodbye, because everything passes quickly, but Jesus goes before us on the other shore

“Where will meet surely again to multiply our love”

Even if the realities of this life get out of hand in a way that often frightens us, nothing will ever be lost and we will meet again with God and with each other in the everlasting river of divine love in a continuous growth that will never end.

Multiply our love

music and words by Filippo Rossi

Here to love and to begin

An image of you within

Wasn’t casual really not

You led us here you alone

Where we met each other what a surprise

To find we are one heart with you, among us

We ’ll never loose all who’s born between us

What if we tremble for now

We are leaving but you precede us to another shore

The rock where Jesus sat during the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes, with the famous mosaic representing it. The missing bread – the miracle loaves were 5 – is the faithful himself, who must offer himself mystically on the altar in union with the Lord.

Multiply loaves and fish

We have nothing but you Lord

Awesome miracles will show

Multiply our love

Is a river that will never cease to flow

Is this lake that soon enough will overflow

In a while will overflow

Here to love and to ensure

That your children may rejoice and turn to you

All the poor, who’s in need

May find us as greater friends and heart’s relief

As soon as we love each other what a surprise

To find we are one heart with you, among us

We’ll never loose all who’s born between us

What if we are so full of joy

For we are together and you precede us to another shore

Multiply loaves and fish

We have nothing but you Lord

Awesome miracles will show

Multiply our love

Is a river that will never cease to flow

Is this lake that soon enough will overflow

In a while will overflow

Multiply loaves and fish

We have just a few little ones

But you look to another thing

You want to see our faith, our love

You want to strengthen us toward the other shore

To the next side where you already wait us even more

Where we’ll meet surely again

To multiply our love
